Choosy Beggar? She Was Offered Camping Gear but Got Upset When the Tent Was Pitched Because It Was Not What She Expected

What should a camping tent look like? Would it be a problem if it was fully enclosed but with no floors? Would you sleep on a tenting cot in a tent with no floor? OP offered a friend his tenting gear, which did not meet her expectations, and they fought. He was unsure whether he was on the wrong side and so posted it on the “AITA” subreddit to get second opinions.

You Can Use My Tent

OP has a friend named Jared who hosts friends gatherings by his lake cottage. Typically, Jared does the gathering on a rotation, where he welcomes 2-4 guests at a time.

However, he decided to switch up things this year and invited everyone(12 people) simultaneously.

They were going to be camping outside Jared’s cottage for three days. While making these plans, two group members, Ashley and Jen, said they had no camping gear. OP then offered to help them; he offered these two people his tent and two cots they could use for the entire stay.

They agreed, and all was set.

Tent or Tarp?

The weekend of the gathering came, and OP flew his Cessna 185 seaplane to the lake cottage. Then the time to pitch the tents came, and Jared helped OP pull his plane out of the grassy part of the yard.

OP then pulled out his camping tent and pitched it for Ashley and Jen. So, this tent is the type you must drape over the plane’s wings and then hook it to the ground. This leaves you with an enclosed space but no floor.

But It Does Not Have a Floor

So, Ashley and Jen saw it, and they seemingly were okay with it. However, later on, everything took a different turn when Ashley asked OP where he was going to sleep. OP said he would sleep at the back of his plane, so he offered them his camping gear.

The moment OP said this, Ashley started asking to be the one to sleep in the back of the plane because she did not want to sleep in a tent that did not have a floor.

OP declined, making Ashley upset. She started going off on OP, calling him the ***hole for misleading them. Looking back, OP is unsure whether he misled them by not telling them the specifics of his tent.

Is he the ***hole?

The Masses Weigh In

This was a thread with mixed reactions as there was a lot of “Not the ***hole,” “You are the ***hole”, and “everyone sucks here.”

Most of them thought OP was not responsible for Ashley’s and Jen’s accommodation and gave them what he had promised. One of them said, “NTA – you told them you have a tent and two cots. None of their business where you get to sleep. It’s your plane. They have no right to demand they get your accommodations. They are acting very entitled to your things. You did what you told them you would. Enjoy your plane.”

Next Level Entitlement?

Another user thought Ashley was fine with the tent, but the problem only arose when she found out that OP had a better option. They said, “Not having the floor wasn’t an issue, but when they learned OP was sleeping in the plane. It was just an excuse to be entitled.”

Another who thought Ashley should have appreciated what she was given said, “If you rely on borrowed camping equipment, you get what you get.”

Another user with the same thoughts added, “NTA. She had a right to be surprised, but getting upset over free accommodation and demanding you give her yours is not a great look.”

But a Tent Should Have a Floor …

Another section of the commenters thought OP was the ***hole for offering them a tarp in the name of a tent. They even added that he should have specified beforehand that the entire thing had no floor.

One said, “But he didn’t have a tent; he had a tarp covering. Everyone will expect a tent to have a floor and a door that seals and keeps most bugs out. If you tell people you can use my tent, and then they find out they are sleeping with bugs, they’ll be pissed off.”

And lastly, “I camp for a living, and I would be surprised if someone offered to lend me a tent and it didn’t have a floor. It’s not standard; half the point of a tent is to keep bugs away from you while you sleep.”

The original poster (OP) is a student who works as a waitress on the side. However, this story takes place at a restaurant where she DOES NOT work, even sometimes. She was there as a customer, but someone said no.
