What is a great first date idea? Is it worth it to go on a fancy dinner date if you are still getting to know each other? OP does not think so. He got into a brawl with his date for turning down a fancy first date proposition, and he came to narrate about it on the “Mildly Infuriating” subreddit.

The Encounter That Started It All

OP(original poster) went to the mall looking for a specific pair of sunglasses. When he got to the store, he met a sales attendant who told him that the specific pairs of sunglasses were not sold in-store.

She then told him he should order them online if he really wanted them. However, she asked him if he would be interested in trying another pair of glasses, to which he accepted. They started talking through the trial process, and OP says they hit it off really quickly.

They Hit It Off

They had so much in common; the conversations were fun and flowed smoothly.

At one point, OP complimented her hair, and the girl pulled out her phone to show him different photos of when her hair was longer. OP also took out his phone and showed her photos of himself. In general, they had a great time and great conversations while sampling different sunglasses.

OP bought a pair of sunglasses, thanked her for the great conversations, and was ready to leave.

Time to Dive Deeper …

She then asked if he wanted to hang out outside her work, which he accepted. They exchanged their Instagrams and added each other. They continued their conversations later that night till 3 am.

The next day, OP asked her if she’d be down to get some coffee in the evening, to which she agreed. OP then asked her to pick the location and time. She replied that she would look around and text the information to OP.

Go Big or Go Home

Later, she texts OP about a fancy restaurant she had chosen. At this point, OP told her they would have to split the bill because he wanted them to meet over coffee, not dinner.

She took some time but finally replied, “If you can afford those sunglasses, you sure can afford to pay a fancy bill.”

OP responded that he could pay the bill but won’t because he wanted to know each other better over coffee first.

Infuriated, she called him cheap for not choosing to take a beautiful woman to a fancy restaurant and added that he was on the losing side for that.

To avoid any more tussling, he just told her it was nice to meet her, and that was the end of it all.

The Masses Weigh In

Many commenters commended OP for his decision to withdraw at that early stage. There were a lot of other comments labeling the woman as high-maintenance and a gold-digger.

One user said, “She saw him buy expensive glasses and saw a free meal ticket.”

Another user said, “I knew a girl in college who used Tinder to get guys to take her out on dates, pay for her meal, and then she would block them once they dropped her off.”

“Sounds like it’s not her first time getting a free meal out of someone. She was never into you, only using you.” Said another commenter. Many other comments insinuated how she was out for the material benefit and never a connection on a meaningful level.

But really, it was great that she made her expectations known early. This may not have worked out well, but at least OP knew of their incompatibility earlier. One user said, “Even if she was into OP, she clearly shows her expectations for her treatment. Like a Queen. Super high maintenance. Good thing OP found out early.”

Who Is To Pay?

It should be a rule of thumb that whoever asks another out should pay the bill. But in this situation, who asked who out?

One commenter said, “I am a woman, and honestly, it sounds like she invited you to the restaurant. She should’ve paid up. You did well.”

Uncouth Behavior

And finally, many others agreed that it was uncouth for her to turn what was supposed to be a simple coffee date into an expensive fancy dinner. One user said, “Yeah, he invites her for coffee, and she turns around and gives him the name of an expensive restaurant. Who does that?”
