OP and his friend had gotten into a marriage partnership for convenience reasons. They, however, amicably broke it off, and OP has a new fiance, but his family won’t stop commenting rudely, which makes OP think they could be belittling his relationship.

When he finally called them out, it only made things more tense.  He posted about it on Reddit, seeking people’s opinions on whether he was wrong for calling out his family.

Married Only on Paper

So, OP lived with his close friend through college. They adopted a dog together and married for convenience when OP was 25 and the friend was 24.

OP says the marriage was strictly on paper, as they never got involved romantically. His friend was not interested in marriage and was still trying to figure out her sexuality. She comes from a traditional family, which was forcing her to “settle down.”

At that time, OP was experiencing a terrible break-up, and his friend was at a rough place in her life, so they decided to dive in and get married for convenience. OP wanted to protect her friend from the queerphobia she was facing from her family.

He also wanted her on his health insurance because she was dealing with many health issues but could not fall back on her family due to their queerphobia.

They did the paperwork bit of it but didn’t have a wedding.

OP says they never got involved romantically and were not even each other’s types.

His family knew the dynamics of this relationship, and they heavily disapproved of it.

“ Come on…It Is Just a Joke…”

When OP returned to the dating scene, they split and legally divorced. To date, they remain very close friends, and OP met his current fiance through her.

At the moment, OP is 32 and is getting ready to marry his fiance. When he announced his engagement to his family, he started receiving comments such as:

“Oh, so Roxie’s (OP’s dog) is getting a new stepmom!”

“Wife #2 at 32, huh? That’s a lot of wives for your age!”

“Let’s hope this 2nd one lasts!”

Comments Make Him Uncomfortable

OP says these comments make him and his fiance uncomfortable. He keeps reminding them that his close friend was not his wife in the traditional sense and that their comments hurt them. The family members, however, dismissed everything saying they were only joking.

OP kept warning them from belittling his fiance, but they kept going.

His mom and sister insisted that if OP did not want to hear such statements, he should not have married his close friend.

So recently, OP got fed up and blew up at them, calling them rude and disrespectful. He even threatened not to invite them to his wedding, resulting in a rift between them. Is he wrong?

The Masses Weigh In

OP’s family has got to be very insensitive. He has made it clear not once that their comments hurt him and his wife, but they kept going. One commenter thought the family members were the ***holes for pushing even when asked to stop. They said, “If their comments make you and your wife uncomfortable and you have asked them multiple times to stop, then they are the bigger ***holes for continuing.”

Firm Boundaries

His mother and sister look like the type that likes pushing set boundaries. If OP does not take a firm stand, his family will undoubtedly keep disrespecting his relationship.

One commenter who thought boundaries need to be set for this violation to stop said, “If I thought I was making a light joke, but the person told me I hurt their feelings, I would apologize and stop. But it seems like the family is doubling down. So you have no other choice than to set your boundaries.”

It’s None of Their Business

And lastly, “NTA. Holy smokes, what is wrong with your family? It’s none of their business who you were married to before, especially when it wasn’t even a romantic relationship. Calling your fiance your “second wife” is disrespectful, and insensitive. Your blow-up was justified, and if they can’t respect your boundaries, they don’t deserve to be at your wedding. Stick to your guns, my dude.”
