A bride came online to share a story about how she fell out with her bridesmaid, kicked her out of the bridal party, and unfriended her after they got into a confrontation because she could not afford an expensive trip to Disneyland before the wedding.

Money Issues

The OP was to get married in a few weeks’ time, and Ashley, one of her bridesmaids, was experiencing money issues. The OP told Ashley that she would understand if she turned down the bridesmaid role, but Ashley insisted she would be fine. She worked in retail, and her husband had lost his job.

Hasn’t Booked Yet

The OP chose an expensive wedding dress and shoes and booked her bachelorette party in Disneyland. Ashley had not bought the tickets to Disneyland, and as the trip neared, the OP started getting apprehensive. She urged her to do so because, due to Covid, the parks were at limited capacity and filled up fast. The OP wanted to confirm if Ashley was going to purchase the ticket.

That is when Ashley lost it. She told the OP that it was inexcusable for her to ask her to spend over $1000 on festivities when she was struggling to pay rent. The OP told her she didn’t need to be a bridesmaid, and there were other occasions she could hop on without incurring such charges.

Ridiculous

Ashley told the OP she was ridiculous that she wanted to exclude her from the bachelorette party because she could not afford to pay for the trip. She told the OP that if she wanted her to participate, she would have to cover her costs.

The OP felt that the request was ridiculous, and after an exchange of words, she uninvited Ashley and blocked her.

The OP wanted to know if she was wrong in blocking Ashley and removing her from the bridal party after Ashley insulted her.

The Masses Weigh In

Some think the OP should pay for the wedding, “OP, if you’re going to have an expensive wedding situation, *actually pay for it* otherwise you can’t actually afford it. I mean *pay* to fly people out and pay for their accommodations etc., expecting someone to spend thousands of dollars to be your friend isn’t great.”

She Clearly Outlined the Options

Another defended the OP saying she had clearly outlined options to the bridesmaid, “#1 – OP asked Ashley if she wanted to be a bridesmaid, and it would have been okay if Ashley declined. But Ashley agreed, knowing full well that it would be costly.

#2 – OP is having her bachelorette party at Disneyland, but not everyone is required to come. OP asked Ashley “if she’s buying a ticket”, perhaps for the Fantasmic dining thing so she can make a reservation and indicate how many people are actually coming. It doesn’t sound like she’s pressuring Ashley to buy a ticket.”

You Were Overwhelmed

Another agreed with this saying, “From my understanding you made it clear you would understand if she couldn’t attend the trip but she felt left out and flipped on you. Your reaction may have been an overreaction but it seems you were overwhelmed when it was supposed to be a magical experience of getting married. Hopefully you’ll be able to patch things up.”

You Told Her the Trip Was Not Mandatory

According to one user, the bridesmaid did not need to travel to Disney, “OP literally told her friend it was not mandatory for her to come, that there would be other activities they could do together as a bridal party to bond. The friend either wanted the trip paid for her or for OP to cancel the trip.”

“So many people are looking past the part you where you gave the option to even be a bridesmaid to begin with. From just your post it seems you’ve been upfront about costs. She sounds stressed which is understandable but she doesn’t get to take it out on you,” argued another person.

Your Wedding, Your Plans

Another user told the OP she did not need to change her plans because others could not afford the trip, “There’s nothing wrong with wanting your bachelorette party at Disneyland. You flat out told her she didn’t need to be there and that you understood money is tight for her right now. This is your wedding, your party, your plans. You can have them be expensive if you want and you told people if they can’t afford it, you understand. You’re not responsible for her saying she was gonna go and then get annoyed because she couldn’t afford it. That’s on her for not speaking up and being honest. I’ve been a bridesmaid three times. It’s expensive and stressful even if the bride is the nicest, most down to earth person there is. I would never tell a bride she can’t have certain activities or party because I myself couldn’t afford to go. The audacity of telling someone they shouldn’t have certain plans because of someone else’s budget is astounding to me.”
