When it comes to your wedding day, you want everything to be perfect, right? From the venue to the dress to the bridesmaids’ outfits. It’s the one day when you want to look and feel your absolute best. But what happens when things don’t go as planned?

OP learned firsthand even with the best intentions; unexpected hiccups can arise, causing you to make tough decisions. Sometimes, those decisions have to do with those closest to you.

Matron of Honor

Wedding bells chimed as she was getting ready for her wedding. She chose to make her best friend the maid of honor for the wedding instead of her sister. Now, she had a very good reason for this, as the primary job of the MOH is helping the bride keep her sanity and handle a bunch of things that would typically bother the bride.

She knew her sister wouldn’t be able to help with all the wedding preparations due to her epilepsy, which stopped her from driving. She had to care for two kids in school, so it just wasn’t enough time for her to deal with preparations.

She still wanted her to be a part of the bridal party, though, so she made her the matron of honor as a way to appease her. However, things were about to take a turn for the worse.

Breaking the Dress Code

When it came to the bridesmaid dresses, she wanted each girl to pick a floor-length dress in their specific color but allowed them to choose the style. Of course, she had to approve everything before they made the purchase.

She picked out an off-shoulder dress with draped sleeves, an illusion cleavage, and a sweetheart neckline for her own dress. The white dress was a stunning piece that would be the pinnacle of beauty at the wedding.

Everything was going smoothly until her sister chose a dress that she had never seen before and disapproved of. The dress had off-the-shoulder draped sleeves, illusion cleavage, a sweetheart neckline, and a thigh-high slit up the front.

It looked a lot like her own and was a shade of white. As much as it didn’t sit well with her, she tried to be supportive of her choice, but her fiancé wasn’t having it. He thought she was trying to upstage OP since she had never had a wedding herself. It’s crazy that OP was still being supportive up to this point; it’s almost obvious that she was trying to steal the thunder at the wedding.

Her sister tried to pick out heels instead of going with the silver shoes that had been agreed on. She chose white bridal heels with white rhinestones. OP declined them entirely and got earrings for her as well.

No Drama, Please

From how she was acting, especially when OP rejected her choices, it seemed her sister was quite spoiled.

OP didn’t want any drama, so she met her sister halfway. She told her she could wear the dress with the slit, but they would close it with binder clips (inside the dress), and she could wear a shawl for the pictures and ceremony.

After the ceremony, she could take off the binder clips and shawl and show off her legs on the dance floor. However, her sister wasn’t having it and accused her of not wanting competition on her wedding day. She ended up calling OP unreasonable, and OP got annoyed at her.

OP decided to kick her out of the bridal party. Considering that her sister was often vindictive, she had her kicked out of the wedding altogether, knowing that she would cause drama and probably ruin the day for her. She doesn’t think she did badly, but she feels conflicted as it is still her sister either way.

What People Think

One user thinks OP should do what she can to prevent her sister from sabotaging her day. Considering how her sister behaves, it’s only fair she does.

“NTA, I think it’s best if you protect yourself from any sabotage. I’ve seen others offer advice about using passwords with vendors to prevent people from claiming to be you and canceling plans. I’m sure there are other things to do as well. Hopefully, someone will comment here for you and give you more thorough advice. Your wedding day is YOUR day. She didn’t get her dress approved because she knew it was like your dress. Don’t let her, or any friends and family that may hear lies from her, convince you that you have to back down. Your day, your way.”

Did the Right Thing

Another user thinks OP did the right thing and absolutely condemns her sister’s actions.

“NTA. She outed herself by outwardly projecting that she thinks you view it as a competition. Not only that, but you offered her a compromise, and she said no. She seems like a “my way or the highway” type of person who won’t accept any type of compromise (and these people are a huge pain to deal with). Just be careful ’cause she sounds like the type who doesn’t take no for an answer and might try to crash the wedding anyways.”
