She does not want to share the cherished culinary book she got from her mother with her half-sister. But a narrative that goes beyond the cookbook’s reverence reveals much more. For the purposes of this narrative, let’s call her Hilda.

The Cookbook History

A cookbook that Hilda’s great-grandmother started before she had children was passed down through the generations to Hilda’s mother before she had children. When Hilda was 7, her mother gave it to her before she became ill and passed away. Her mother cautioned her to treat it with care because of its sentimental value to the family.

The Revelation

A couple of years after her mother passed away, Hilda discovered that her father had an affair with his now wife and that her half-sister was born before her parents divorced. As she was so little then, she had no idea what was happening.

It was difficult for Hilda to be around her father after she found this out. She remembered her mother’s sadness, and now she understood why. In addition, she found out that he had told her mother in a particularly harsh fashion. All this Hilda discovered when she overheard her father arguing with her late mother’s brother and sister. Ever since then, she has avoided him, his wife, and her half-siblings.

The Other Sister

For some reason, her father informed her oldest half-sister (also a girl) of the cookbook’s existence. He went on and on about how much it meant to her. Then, her half-sister became interested and wanted to see it. Her half-sister hopes to one day join Hilda in using it as a cookbook and journal. Hilda repeatedly denied her half-sister’s request, and she found the constant pestering annoying.

After being told no, her half-sister became angry and began to cry. Hilda explained that it was a family secret from her mother’s side that she didn’t want to share until she had kids. But this wasn’t acceptable to her half-sister, who claimed that the two of them were indeed related.

Hilda’s father and wife are furious with her. Hilda’s dad’s parents also informed her that she should have shared it with her half-sister and that she was being unkind. They make the claim that her mother isn’t even alive to care whether or not the child born from the affair is using the book. Hilda is unconcerned about her father’s or his wife’s opinions. She has zero regard for them. Yet she has always gotten along with her grandparents, which makes her feel worried about their disapproval.

In someone’s opinion, Hida’s half-sister is being a spoiled brat and has no right to the cookbook. They argue that it is only for Hilda’s maternal family members. Even though she’s Hilda’s sister, she’s not Hilda’s mum’s daughter.

There’s also the issue of Hilda’s dad and his wife unnecessarily stirring the pot by telling Hida’s half-sister more and more of the cookbook. Hilda’s parents appear to be deliberately making things worse by insisting that Hilda share her cookbook and even get angry because she won’t. Will it be okay for Hilda to tell her grandparents and all concerned that she doesn’t wish to disrespect her mother’s memory? Perhaps keep her book somewhere safe, preferably with one of her mum’s relatives, or locked in a safe as the user suggests?
